The emoji, smiley faces, confetti streamers and dazzling hearts that have become a ubiquitous part of our daily communication may occupy a rightful place on your iPhone screen or on the screens of your social media feeds, but can they be called art? It was a controversial question when the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) acquired a set of original 176 emoji in 2016. MoMA’s decision to include these icons in its permanent collection challenged the hierarchical view that has long defined fine art as high culture and mass-cultural products like video games and digital typefaces as low culture.
But in announcing the acquisition and in designing the way they would be displayed, MoMA’s Architecture and Design experts made clear that they did not consider the emoji as works of art. Instead, they considered them as a design innovation.
As a form of contemporary pop culture, emoji are characterized by their visual appeal and by the fact that they are often created to replace words in text messages or other forms of electronic communication. They are also characterized by their functionality and the ways that they affect human behavior and culture.
It is precisely because they are a product of the visual culture that we live in, and because they have been used to express various emotions and behaviors, that these characters can be considered works of art. The emoji are therefore comparable to Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain (1917), a manufactured urinal that was given the dignity of an artwork by being exhibited upside down, disabling its utilitarian function.
